What Are Cosmetic Fillings?
A cosmetic filling is when a dentist applies tooth-colored composite resin in order to fix a cavity, or a chipped or fractured tooth. This can be done in a single visit and will give a natural look to your filling, so no one knows you’ve had one done.
How Are They Done?
Dr. Pulver will choose the color of the composite to match your teeth so that your filling will be undetectable. Dr. Pulver will first numb your tooth and surrounding gums so you should not experience any pain during the procedure. Then, we will remove any tooth decay and clean the area. Then, Dr. Pulver will replace what was taken out with the composite resin filling. The resin is then molded and smoothed into the right shape. And finally, we will clean and polish the tooth, so it looks like new!
Your mouth will remain numb for a few hours after the procedure, and you should have little to no discomfort. It’s important to note that certain substances, like tea and coffee, can change the color of the resin. To prevent discoloration, it’s best to avoid those foods and drinks that can stain for the first 48 hours and make sure to have teeth regularly cleaned by a dental hygienist. You should also regularly brush and floss on your own to ensure you maintain proper oral hygiene.
Composite resin isn’t as strong as tooth enamel, but the material does last many years before having to be replaced. Speak with your dentist about your oral habits to make sure that you are doing what you can to make your filling last. Things like chewing on ice can chip the material as well.
Dangers of Not Getting a Cavity Filled?
If a cavity is not filled, the tooth decay will continue to spread and can even destroy your tooth completely. We recommend getting fillings completed as soon as possible so that you can avoid more major procedures like root canals or tooth extractions.
