A dental crown is a type of dental restoration that can help fix cracked, chipped, uneven, weak, or discolored teeth. Crowns are also used on anchor teeth to support a dental bridge. A false tooth, or pontic, is attached to the crowned teeth, filling a gap left by a missing tooth.
Dental Crowns are a great way to ensure healthy, strong, cosmetically-pleasing teeth. Each crown is customized to match the color and look of your other teeth perfectly, making them virtually undetectable next to your real teeth. Dental crowns are made from porcelain, ceramic, or metal material (Zirconia) at Dr. Pulver’s office.
How Is Your Tooth Prepared For the Crown?
Oftentimes, crowns are used as a restorative solution alongside additional dental treatments. If you need another procedure before the crown is placed, such as a root canal or dental filling, that will be completed first.
To make room for your crown, Dr. Pulver will shave down the tooth receiving it minimally (1-1.5 mm). Then he will take a mold of your teeth to ensure proper fitting. After that, the specs will be sent to the lab for creation. In the meantime, you will be fitted with a temporary crown. Ultimately, Dr. Pulver will use a special dental adhesive to place your permanent crown.
How Do Dental Bridges Work?
Bridges are a highly effective dental restoration treatment used in place of a dental implant. Patients who do not want or cannot have a dental implant benefit from bridges.
A dental bridge does exactly what the name implies — bridges an empty space or gap between teeth. Your natural teeth or dental implants serve as the bridge anchors on either side and must be in excellent condition to secure your bridge for years to come. Additionally, you must clean underneath your bridge each day to keep your gums healthy and prevent decay.
Taking Care Of Your Dental Crown/Bridge
Certain precautions must be taken with temporary crowns. Since they are more delicate than natural teeth, you should avoid eating anything hard or sticky to prevent breakage.
Once you have a permanent crown, make sure to maintain healthy oral habits like twice-daily brushing, flossing, and routine checkups and cleanings with your dentist. The same should be observed with dental bridges, too.
